I never set out to have a cat; he just sort of came upon me. And I especially never set out to have a blind cat. But I have learned so much from my little feline friend. Two main things come to mind:
1. seeing him adventure around the house, and readily go up and down the stairs without vision and yet without hesitation; it’s really remarkable. He doesn’t let fear of the unknown stop him; that’s for certain.
2. Sometimes I see him hit things headfirst, rushing ahead not realizing there’s a wall there, or a vacuum here, or box there. When I see him hit his head, I flinch as if I hit my head, feeling his hurt and feeling sorry for him, I apologize. But he never lets out a noise of pain, anger, frustration, or resentment; he just moves on and keeps going.
I think if I hit my head or stubbed my toe, I’d be swearing and frustrated and angry, but he never shows signs of any of that. He just moves on, as calm as a cucumber. Now that’s resilience. That’s “bounce back-ability.”
Winks sets the example for all three of us in this household. And for that, I am thankful.
